La Christina

By

As I was saying before. Christina.

The rich cousin, the beautiful cousin, the one who didn’t even have to try hard to have all the attention on her.

I didn’t envy her, not like Jessica. Being the youngest comes with its perks.

Visiting her was like staying at an all-inclusive resort. The home’s grand entrance was something of movies, the long drive up the hill towards the grand mansion that was sprawled with maids, and chiefs, and oh god the pools!

Indoor pools, outdoor pools, pools with the nice jets that made my cousins short’s puff up. We loved it, being able to walk up to grab some food, always banana milkshakes for me, and being able to jump right back to the pool. Immediate and uninterrupted fun.

And Christina, loved having us there. At that time, I didn’t realize how lonely she was. She was an only child and our visits were seasonal. So, when we were there, she went all out to make sure we were having the best time.

She took the oldest cousins out to the clubs, bribing us the youngest not to snitch. They would sneak out when the parents were too busy or intoxicated to tell any of us were missing. I don’t know what happened at these parties, I just know that at one of these events is what triggered an event that caused a rift between Jessica and Christina.

Some of my cousins say it was because of a boy, of course. Others say it was because of Jessica’s foul attitude which caused a negative reaction from Christina. A few even say that the two got into a physical altercation. But the truth. No one has shared with me

Now, we don’t go into family business here, let’s just say the family harvests and produces coffee. That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less. Choose to imagine what you wish, and it still isn’t enough.

This was a something that caused both admiration and jealousy within the family. The planation solely belonged to the Sol family, but not every member. Those who left El Salvador to migrate to the States relinquished their rights.

None of the riches, none of the property, and most of the none of the business would belong to them.

We knew this from the beginning, but that didn’t stop Jessica from complaining about it. She felt it wasn’t fair, that she didn’t ask for the life she was given. And especially that Christina had everything she wanted, and it was just handed to her.

I don’t think Christina even wanted the life she was given. Truth be told, I think all she wanted was to be loved. She was an only child living in a lavish and lonely world with a busy father and a deceased mother.

And what do girls do that don’t get the proper love from her father? They fall in love with toxic boys.

That is exactly what Arturo was.
